Frequently asked questions
How do I book an appointment?
You can book online through our secure booking portal (Halaxy) or get in touch by email (enquiry@mosspsych.com.au). We’ll ask for a few details, such as your contact information, date of birth, and what’s bringing you in. You’re welcome to share any preferences around days or times. Once booked, you’ll receive a welcome email with your appointment details, how to find us, and what to expect.
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No referral is needed to book an appointment at The Moss Psychology Practice. We are a private practice and do not offer Medicare rebates, so there’s no need to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.
Do you offer after-hours appointments?
Yes. We offer a number of after-hours appointments, including weekday evenings and Saturdays. A $50 after-hours surcharge applies to sessions outside standard business hours (before 9 AM or after 5 PM on weekdays, and anytime on weekends or public holidays).
How long is each session?
A standard session runs for just over 50 minutes. This applies to both your initial consultation and any follow-up appointments.
Do you see children or adolescents?
At this time, we are only seeing clients aged 18 and over.
How much do sessions cost?
Our standard fee is $230 for a 50-minute session (in person or via telehealth). This rate is below the Australian Psychological Society’s recommended fee of $300.
How do I pay for sessions?
Payment is made by credit card and is processed before your session begins. A valid credit card is required at the time of booking. Returning clients will have payments processed via the card on file.
Do you offer Medicare rebates or bulk billing?
No. The Moss Psychology Practice is a full-fee private practice and does not offer Medicare rebates or bulk billing.
Can I claim through my private health insurance?
If your private health fund includes ‘extras’ cover for psychological services, you may be able to claim a rebate. After payment, you’ll receive an email receipt you can use to lodge your claim. Some health funds require different item numbers on invoices—if you run into issues, just let us know and we can update the receipt for you.
Do you accept NDIS, WorkCover, TAC, or other third-party funding?
We don’t offer services under third-party funding schemes like NDIS, WorkCover, TAC, ATAPS, EAP, Victims of Crime, or DVA. If you're self-managing an NDIS plan, you may be able to claim a rebate after paying privately for your sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule.
Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will incur a 50% fee.
Cancellations made within 24 hours or missed appointments will be charged at the full session fee.
You’ll receive a courtesy SMS reminder five days before your session and a follow-up email reminder two days beforehand. Please make sure your contact details are up to date, as keeping track of appointments remains your responsibility.
Is The Moss Psychology Practice right for me?
While we welcome enquiries from anyone interested in therapy, we do not currently see couples, individuals experiencing active psychosis or significant crisis or risk, eating disorders, or those seeking services under third-party funding arrangement e.g., NDIS, WorkCover, TAC, DVA, or VOCAT.
How often should I attend therapy?
We typically recommend weekly sessions to begin with, especially in the early stages, so that momentum can build. After the initial phase, your psychologist will work with you to adjust the frequency based on your needs, progress, and preferences.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies from person to person. Some clients come for short-term support around a specific issue, while others engage in longer-term therapy to work through deeper patterns or past experiences. Your psychologist will collaborate with you to find a pace and focus that makes sense for your goals.
What if I don’t feel therapy is working?
Therapy outcomes depend on several factors: your connection with your psychologist, the nature of the challenges you're facing, and how long you've been attending. If you’re not seeing the progress you hoped for, it's important to raise this with your psychologist. You can explore what's getting in the way and adjust the approach together. If it still doesn’t feel like the right fit, we're happy to support you in finding someone who may be a better match.
What if I don’t feel a connection with my psychologist?
A good therapeutic relationship is key to effective therapy. If you’re unsure about the fit, you’re welcome to bring this up in session, or reach out to us. We’re happy to talk it through and, if needed, suggest alternative practitioners outside of the practice.
Is my information confidential?
Yes. Everything you discuss in therapy is kept confidential. There are only a few situations where we are legally required to share information: if there is serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, if a child or older person is at risk of harm, or if we're required to comply with a court order. If any of these situations come up, your psychologist will talk it through with you.
What to expect in your first session?
Your first session at The Moss Psychology Practice is a chance to talk about what’s brought you to therapy in a supportive, low-pressure space. We’ll start with a bit of paperwork, then explore your current concerns, background, and what you'd like to work on. Together, we’ll begin to form a plan that suits your needs and goals. Most people feel some relief after just a few sessions, though lasting change can take time. Progress often depends on things like your support network, readiness and willingness to reflect, and how regularly you attend sessions. If you’ve been referred by a GP or psychiatrist, you can bring any relevant paperwork that you think can be helpful for us to understand what is going on for you at the time. We’re a private-billing practice and don’t offer Medicare rebates at this time.
Note: We don’t offer phone or message contact between sessions other than to discuss appointments.
If you need urgent help, contact Lifeline (13 11 14), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), or 000 in an emergency.
Do you offer assessments or legal reports?
The Moss Psychology Practice is a therapy-focused service at this time. We don’t offer assessments or reports for legal matters, including court reports, custody evaluations, or fitness-for-work assessments.
If you’re involved in current or upcoming legal proceedings, you must let us know before starting therapy. If this is not disclosed, we may need to discontinue treatment.
Can I get a letter for University special consideration or similar requests?
We may be able to provide brief supporting documents (e.g., for university special consideration), but only on a case-by-case basis. Please tell us at your first session if this is your intention.
Keep in mind:
• Approval depends on your university or institution’s policies.
• Support letters are only written within a session if your psychologist agrees it’s appropriate.
• If the report is written outside session and it takes longer than 5 minutes to write, a fee of $5 per additional minute applies.
• Alternatively, you may prefer to request documentation from your GP.
Do you do one-off assessments or one-session evaluations?
No. We don’t provide one-off assessments or evaluations for third-party purposes.
